What, We've Got Oil

You do realize that we have no idea how much oil we have, and our wacky unwillingness to find and extract it is:

  • Severe Cognitive Dissonance -- with gas prices so high we'll bitch about it, but we'll allow the wacko's to keep us from drilling or building new refineries
  • Unknown to most Americans, we just think we are out -- we don't realize we are so restricted by enviro wacko's

Businessweek
MAY. 4 5:32 P.M. ET
A tiny oil company has snapped up leasing rights to a half-million acres in central Utah that it says could yield a billion barrels or more of oil.

Geologists are calling it a spectacular find -- the largest onshore discovery in at least 30 years, located in a region of complex geology long abandoned for exploration by major oil companies. It's turning out to contain high-quality oil already commanding a premium at refineries.

There's Gold In Them Thar Hills! Now if we could just stuff a wacko's own dirty socks in the biggest wacko's mouths perhaps we could get some of it!

Lets face it, our economy runs on oil and when it becomes financially advantageous for someone to develop an alternative then someone will develop a reasonable alternative - not a day before and not a day after (From my post Past The Peak--We Will Run Out). Until then it's all hands to the drills!

The Left Beyond The Touch Of Reason

Once again, we seem to be treading into dangerous territory. Just as back in the 60's, the MSM, Walter Cronkite, the New York Times, various pundits, gave intellectual cover to the worst excesses of rhetoric and ultimately to violence, the rhetoric is ratcheting upwards into dangerous territory. Central figures in the MSM, and in the Democratic party, are making charges that legitimize violence. If Bush lied (a meme that seems to never be far from the surface of the NY Times), if the Republicans "stole" a second consecutive election, if our soldiers, just as charged n Vietnam, are committing atrocities sanctioned by their superiors, logic dictates that some on the extreme left will take this as fact (and, some go much further into more complicated paranoid delusions) and take the step into violence. Thus far we have been treated to various conservatives being pelted with food when they have appeared on campuses. It will almost certainly escalate from here.

So says ShrinkWrapped in an excellent, well written analysis by an psycoanalyst! Read the whole thing -- Dangerous Portents.

In the past I have said that I feared this mindset. How will it end, no one knows butl:

When your enemies are evil, dangerous fascists who are dedicated to destroying your country, your civil rights, and enslaving and/or killing various innocents, it becomes incumbent on right minded people to act to prevent further horrors. This is the logic of the left, aided and abetted by large parts of the MSM, Academia, and the Democratic Party. While they will accuse the Republicans and Bush of doing exactly what I just described, their logic fails when it can not encompass 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq elections, 3/11, the Cedar revolution, and so much more, but much of the left is beyond the touch of reason; will violence follow?

The Killers - Music Trek

I love the band The Killers, I mentioned them here - Entertainment Trek - Dizzy Day - where I wrote:
To the point, The Killers are great like a compelling mix of the original (not the newer "hipper" new stuff) U2, Duran Duran, The Cure, and Erasure. I love them!
Well a week or so I came across this review by this woman in Junk Magazine that spins an entire tale of a gay murder story played out in the album. I have sat on this for a few days and I have to agree with what she says. First, I agree that their music just makes me happy. Second, I think her interpretation may be on the mark.

Read the review: (Scroll down)

Are The Killers Gayer Than Fitness Fridays!?

I admit that while I have been listening to their album basically non-stop since early August, I had accepted the lyrics as typical, catchy, love-ish songs. Then again, I am the girl who had been singing along to Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet” for something along the lines of twelve years before figuring out that it was about Elvis. So maybe I’m just kind of dense. It took the knowledge that there was a hidden plotline to the album to get me to listen the songs more closely. Then, like a bolt of lightening, a ridiculously complex and tenuously cogent theory hit me during one of the Killers’ Irving Plaza shows in October (which was, by the way, one of the best shows I have seen in a long time).

NCLB Follies!

ROCKFORD Register Star April 5, 2005 -- Rockford is one of only two Illinois school districts to lose federal money earmarked for improving reading. The reason: Superintendent Dennis Thompson turned away monitors who came in February to see whether the money was being spent correctly.

The cost: At least $681,000. The grants are the federal government's way of paying for the No Child Left Behind Act, the sweeping law that forces districts to improve or face sanctions.

Thompson told monitors to come back after making an appointment in advance. The state, which runs the Reading First grant for the federal Department of Education, says rescheduling an investigative visit is not acceptable. The state has been under increasing pressure from the federal government to improve how it monitors the grants.
...

Thompson, who got word of the grant loss last week, said Monday that the incident was an unfortunate miscommunication that doesn’t matter.

“The issue with the grant is that it is so restrictive that you can only use it in so many ways,” Thompson said.

Those ways did not jibe with his plans for the district’s reading program, so he didn’t plan to pursue more Reading First money for 2005-06, he said.

Still, Thompson said he has talked with the state to improve communication. He didn’t like being told about the visit with one day’s notice.

“Could I have done things better? Certainly,” Thompson said.
Districts around the country have opted not to take the federal money because Reading First endorses and pays for just a handful of reading programs. In Wisconsin, the Madison district declined $2 million last year because the district had its own reading program and wanted to stick with it.
...

The loss will hit 10 schools in the 2005-06 school year: Lewis Lemon, Ellis, Beyer, Jackson, Spring Creek, Summerdale, Westview, McIntosh, Nashold and Swan Hillman.

The schools will lose literacy coaches, training for teachers and money to buy reading materials. Thompson said the money was paying for programs that are out of step with the reading approach he wants used, called “balanced literacy.”

That approach relies on training teachers to discover where students are struggling and beefing up lessons.

Thompson’s chief academic officer, Martha Hayes, introduced testing three times a year to identify elementary students’ strengths and weaknesses.

The 10 Reading First schools had to give the district-endorsed tests and another round of grant-endorsed tests. Thompson said that was too much.

In addition, all teacher training and materials went to programs that differed from the balanced literacy approach.

The shift to balanced literacy has not been without controversy. Former Lewis Lemon Principal Tiffany Parker resisted the move away from “direct instruction,” a scripted phonics program that Parker said led her school’s third-grade students to some of the district’s top test scores in 2003.

Parker was demoted to an assistant principal at Lincoln Middle School in January. Shortly after, Thompson hired private attorneys to probe the Lewis Lemon scores. Parker, in turn, filed a civil suit against Thompson.

In earlier interviews with the Rockford Register Star, Parker said she told the state that the new wave of reading was hurting her ability to run the program supported by Reading First. She won’t comment now because of her lawsuit.

After years of minority litigation and millions in settlement costs the taxpayers of Rockford can't afford this incompetence - gee, wonder why the left says the NCLB isn't working and is not funded. I don't want to hear another word about NCLB being underfunded, ever!

Fools!
DKK

And another thing - Silly Superintendent, for nearly $700,000 he couldn't find it in his heart to make direct instruction work? WTF, the district's budget is $226,700,000 for 2005. Every penny is important to taxpayers, but not to the administrators!

While We're On The Subject - Insanity and Elections

First Moby now Bill Maher and the Governor of Wisconsin........ who cares about the gay gene!! I want to know if these people were really raised that way! Is this insanity nature or nuture?

Who knows, but in a previous post - If you can't throw an election throw a fit - I compared the Democratic Underground (DU) to the insane:
...a day at DU is like walking into a shrill and painful sounding psycho ward. The one where the constant painful cries of, "I AM Napoleon and my empire HAS been stolen," echo off of the bare cement walls until your ears hurt and you are forced to turn away in sorry disgust.

Here is a challenge - come up with other commonly known insane rants from folklore, movies, books that would apply to the current rants at DU. (election stolen, war is illegal, Bush undermined the UN.....hahahah that one made me laugh.....)
DKK

BTW, I would like to apologize to the insane for the painful comparison!

This is a repeat of a previous post, hoping for much more input.
Thanks,
DKK

Random Name Trek - Veronica Lake

lick title for the rest of this IMDB bio
'Constance Keane' (her stepfather's surname), beauty pageant winner, came to Hollywood with her star-struck mother in 1938. Enrolled in the Bliss Hayden School of Acting, she began playing extra and bit parts, eventually in about 6 films. An abortive screen test at MGM led to a better one at Paramount, a contract, and a breakout role in I Wanted Wings (1941), as a torch-singing vamp. Producer Arthur Hornblow Jr. renamed her Veronica Lake for this film; she was 17. Her best films include two comedies, _Sullivan's Travels (1942)_ and I Married a Witch (1942), and her three film-noirs with Alan Ladd (1942-46). Her screen image was cool yet sultry, tough yet vulnerable. Her comedy talent was recognized by 'Rene Clair' and Preston Sturges but not by Paramount, which then cast her in cameos and routine supporting roles until 1948 when her contract was dropped. Mismanagement by director-husband André De Toth and intermittent heavy drinking ended her film career by 1952. She had steady TV and stage work until 1959 when a severe ankle break sidelined her; she resumed work as a Baltimore TV hostess in 1962, returned to the stage 1963 and appeared in plays (and two low-budget films) through 1970. She was 53 when she died of hepatitis in 1973. The great films and performances for which she is and will be remembered date from 1941-1946 when she was 21-26 years old.

My Mom, who passed away in an auto accident at age 54 (in 92), just one year older then Veronica, would always call our dog Veronica Lake when her hair fell in front of her eyes..............this is why.

(BTW, our dog NEVER looked this good!)

Still On The Subject Of Insanity

Bill Maher, who I personally never thought was funny, edgy, or even timely (just arrogant!) proves again why he should just shut up!

And Craig Ferguson won my admiration for shutting him up!

Via The Corner:

CBS

Late Late Show

May 3, 2005

34:00

Bill Maher: "I think that there is no perspective. People have no perspective, especially about crime. You know, zero tolerance. You know, of course, nobody ever wants to see a child, you know, diddled. That’s just plain wrong. But even the people who are testifying against him, they’re saying that he serviced them. They didn’t service him."

Craig Ferguson: "You don’t have kids, do you, Bill?"

Maher: "No."

Ferguson: "No. I have a son. It makes me crazy, this thing, this Michael Jackson thing. It drives me, the idea of someone touching my kid, I would go, I nearly swore there. I’d go crazy."

Maher: "Very wrong. But, you know, I remember when I was a kid. I was savagely beaten once by bullies in the schoolyard. Savagely beaten. If I had a choice between being savagely beaten and being gently masturbated by a pop star. It’s just me."

Ferguson: "The always controversial Bill Maher, everybody."

Maher: "What? That’s it?"

Ferguson: "Bill Maher. We’ll be right back with Rain Pryor."

I think that beating did serious brain damage to this man! I am so glad he is only on HBO that way I never have to risk catching his show while surfing!

HBO is a pay service and as such they don't have to wait for the ratings to feel pressure from customers. Here's hoping they do!

Elections Matter, But Not To The D's

About that voter reform in my Neighbor to the North, Wisconsin, From DANE and Redstate:

Wisconsin rivaled WA in fraud-u-votes, upon which the (D)'s rely... so this is no surprise:
Gov. Jim Doyle(D) Friday vetoed the voter photo ID. Today, the State Assembly failed to override his veto.
Although the photo ID bill was one of the most hotly debated issues during Tuesday's session, the outcome wasn't a surprise. Republicans had expected to fall short of having a two-thirds majority - 66 votes - to override Doyle's veto of the bill.

The final vote was 61 to 34. Four Assembly Democrats - Reps. Peggy Krusick of Milwaukee, Tom Nelson of Kaukauna, Tony Staskunas of West Allis and Bob Ziegelbauer of Manitowoc - joined Republicans in supporting it. Two Republicans - Reps. Terri McCormick of Appleton and Suzanne Jeskewitz of Menomonee Falls - weren't present for the vote.
While Doyle gets to maintain an election status quo Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and Rep. Mark Green both get a popular issue to hammer the incumbant with. 80+% of likely voters back a photo ID requirement before voting. 70% of municiple clerks, the people who run local polls, also back the measure. Yet Doyle is too politically tone deaf or too beholden to Democrats who don't mind shenanigans at the polls.
You have to show ID to vote in Mexico... you have to be registered with a work permit to have a job in Mexico...

Oh... and Wisconsin went for Kerry(D) by 11,384 votes out of almost 3 million cast. Funny all we heard about was Ohio where the gap was over 118,599...

Amazing how the will of the people doesn't matter to the Dem's at the state level or in the Senate isn't it! Elections matter and as long as they fail to realize that they will continue to be a minority party!

That 70's Ball

Sonny and Cher, Farah, Dirty Harry, and John Travolta. These are the sights that greeted you Saturday Night, April 30, 2005, at the 17th Annual Berry Ball for Rockford's Janet Wattles Mental Health Center, held at Giovanni's Restaurant.

This years ball was titled, "That 70's Ball," and as you can imagine it was based on the 70's. Yep, the era of Disco, Nixon, McGovern, the end of the Vietnam war, John Kerry's high point, gas lines, the bicentennial, and Carter. Despite all of these memories the ball was quite a blast, including the period costumes worn by attendees.

Giovanni's did an outstanding job on the food which included BOTH Giovanni's Special Filet and Chicken De Jonge. I loved the chicken and redskined mashed potatoes and the filet was tender and looked great but it had a bit of a herb taste that I didn't enjoy. Desert was a wonderful Triple Chocolate Truffle that had a perfect raspberry on every plate - I mean perfect - attention to detail does make all the difference doesn't it!

The MC for the evening was WREX-TV 13 News Anchor Dani Maxwell who did a wonderful job - she really is cute and tiny you know.

Music was provided by the 2004 Classic Rock RAMI (Rockford Area Music Industry) Award Winners Clutch Cargo. The music was outstanding and the dance floor was full the entire evening.

Marta Jones of Outhouse Inc. was this years Berry Ball Chair.

In attendance were popular Rockford favorites including Mr. Mustache (Bruce Lewis) former Mayors Box and Scott along with local business leaders. I didn't see our new Mayor Larry Morrissey (I - historically votes D) which seemed odd as I think I have seen Rockford's current Mayor at every ball I have attended. Perhaps this will foretell the new independent administrations direction, time will tell if this is a good strategy in a City where leaders are noticed by their absence.

If you have never been to a Berry Ball it is definitely a good time and the money goes toward supporting Janet Wattles the largest provider of Mental Health Services in Northern Illinois. From their website:
Janet Wattles Center is a not-for-profit community behavioral health center serving individuals and families in Northern Illinois. The center is supported by grants, fees, foundations, and corporate and individual donations.

Janet Wattles Center provides an array of assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for adults, children and adolescents. The professional staff at Janet Wattles Center treats a variety of mental illnesses…from anxiety disorders and depression…to schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder…to A.D.D. and emotionally disturbed children. Janet Wattles Center offers board certified psychiatrists and a board certified child psychiatrist. The clinic provides group and individual therapy, financial assistance, living assistance and vocational help.

The qualities of mental health are essential to leading a healthy life. Whether you're poor, rich, male, female, young, or old…from the west side or east side, suburb or city, Janet Wattles Center wants you to know you have a friend to turn to…someone who cares and wants to help. Need to contact someone at Janet Wattles Center? Click here.

The Berry Ball runs unusually smooth, has the best music of any balls I have attended in Rockford, and has some of the best silent auction and regular auction items out there.

There was also a unique raffle, for $30 you could purchase one of 100 numbered bags containing a Stirling Silver Cubic Zirconia fashion necklace provided by Clodius and Company with a random bag containing a half carat brilliant cut diamond solitaire pendant set in white gold that was also provided by Clodius (value over $1000 I think). A great deal!

The regular auction items this year were:
  • Gail Sayers autographed football donated by LaMonica Beverages and Mary Gubbe Lee
  • A trip on Hooters Air including $500 at Mariott Hotels donated by Northwest Chicagoland International Airport at Rockford and Area Mechanical
  • Trane Central Air donated by Area Mechanical and the Genore Family
  • A giant (43" I think) flat screen TV donated by Merchant Police
  • An Italian Dinner for 10, including a seven course dinner - each course having it's own wine all prepared and provided by Mike and Mary Ann Abate, Mark and Theresa Hiser, Bill and Martha Hutt, and Jack and Mary Teela. This is an annual favorite.
Decoration assistance was provided by Rockford College's SOAP (Society of Artsy People).
DKK

Disclosure - My sister, Denise Noe, is the marketing and development director for Janet Wattles and Jason is a member of SOAP - but this didn't influence my opinion, the ball was a blast!

More Yellow Shirt Bloggin

Okay, I know from the sitemeter that your interested in the Capital One Bright Yellow Shirt "NO" commercial that I briefly reviewed here (Screaming Like A Little Girl) when they first ran.

Here is the link to the AdLand - Capital One Bright Yellow Shirt ad (Search Yellow Shirt in the search box. Sorry, can't link directly) which is still the only copy I can find online. It will cost you 2 pounds UK (just under $4 US) to see their ads for a month but they have an extensive inventory so it should be worth it.

Now for a bit more background on the ads. The, "NO" Ads were the concept of McCann-Erickson Agency, New York. After creating the ads, it was given the boot by Capital One, which shifted the business to DDB Chicago. Which is probably when they improved form the tired old "NO" ads to the intern series which includes the "Air Horn" and the infamous "Bright Yellow Shirt" Ads.

The business was more then likely transferred because the series of ads, including the "what's in Your Wallets" ads had low ratings, but based on the searches for this commercial this new commercial has turned the corner on those ratings. (USA Today 3/13/2005)
Of those familiar with the ads, 30% "dislike" them, well above Ad Track's average of 13%. That 30% score is higher than the most-disliked ads of 2004: Miller ads with a political candidate challenging Anheuser-Busch's role as the "King of Beers" were disliked by 26% of consumers in Ad Track last year.

Only 12% of consumers like the Capital One ads "a lot," below the Ad Track survey average of 21%.

DKK

UPDATE: I saw this ad again this AM and laughed my ass off - this is soooo well done no wonder people love it!

Kerry's 180

93 days ago, John Kerry promised, on national TV, to sign form SF-180 and release his military records. He has yet to do so.

Meet The Press Transcript (01/30/2005). Key excerpt:

MR. RUSSERT: Many people who’ve been criticizing you have said: Senator, if you would just do one thing and that is sign Form 180, which would allow historians and journalists complete access to all your military records. Thus far, you have gotten the records, released them through your campaign. They say you should not be the filter. Sign Form 180 and let the historians…

SEN. KERRY: I’d be happy to put the records out. We put all the records out that I had been sent by the military. Then at the last moment, they sent some more stuff, which had some things that weren’t even relevant to the record. So when we get–I’m going to sit down with them and make sure that they are clear and I am clear as to what is in the record and what isn’t in the record and we’ll put it out. I have no problem with that.

MR. RUSSERT: Would you sign Form 180?

SEN. KERRY: But everything, Tim…

MR. RUSSERT: Would you sign Form 180?

SEN. KERRY: Yes, I will.

Why the 180 Mr. Kerry?

The Liberal Mind In One Sentence

"Your taking an illogical premise and proceeding logically to an illogical conclusion." Donald Rumsfeld

Finally a Transcript!

Last week I blogged the Fox News Watch's best lines but I forgot one. Well the repeat of the show was preempted for the installation of the new Pope.

So I checked Fox news 3 times a day looking for the transcript.........and finally, a week later it is up! WTF is that........

Anyway Jim had a GREAT line that I just couldn't remember and here it is:

PINKERTON: ...liberal, secular reporters' talk about the Catholic Church reminds me of W.C. Fields reading the Bible. He says, "I'm looking for loopholes." Looking for ways out.

This line is the best, it is SOOOO true and needs to be reread because this is exactly what the liberals are doing and do about everything. They did it with Saddam, the NorKs, Sandy Berger, Oh yea, remember it is all about what is, is.

PINKERTON: ...liberal, secular reporters' talk about the Catholic Church reminds me of W.C. Fields reading the Bible. He says, "I'm looking for loopholes." Looking for ways out.

Here is the rest of that posting with the forgotten line in place:
Today's Fox News Watch held three quotes about religion that made this episode a stand out in media punditry.

All are paraphrased as I didn't write them down:

  1. Hey, the liberal media just doesn't understand that the ten commandments aren't a voluntary initiative - Cal describing the media failure to understand that the Pope is in fact Catholic.
  2. PINKERTON: ...liberal, secular reporters' talk about the Catholic Church reminds me of W.C. Fields reading the Bible. He says, "I'm looking for loopholes." Looking for ways out.
  3. Even Hollywood atheists can have their prayers answered! Jim describing the success of the NBC production Revelations.
Thanks for you patience, but it was definately worth the wait, read that line again:
PINKERTON: ...liberal, secular reporters' talk about the Catholic Church reminds me of W.C. Fields reading the Bible. He says, "I'm looking for loopholes." Looking for ways out.

Hey, I Said That

Hey, back just a short time ago I encouraged the Republicans in the Senate to force a true filibuster (you know the 24/7 kind) and if they succeed at holding together THEN they should use the constitutional option.

(Regaining the Offensive - 4/16/2005 Where I said:Republicans have to get back on offense and force a REAL fillibuster - you know, the Mr. Smith performance just like the Dem's are running in their ads! Should the Democrats actually be able to pull that off then use the constitutional option, but one way or another force this issue!)

Well, Dick Morris (who was so far off on so many things during the general election) makes a very good arguement for exactly what I suggested.

Read it here A better option on judges: Bring on a real filibuster.

Frist and the GOP need to let the Democrats demonstrate how noxious the filibuster really is before they try to explain to America why they are curtailing it. And the best way to do that is to let the Democrats deploy their weapon. Call their bluff. And let ’er rip!

I couldn't agree with the idea any more if I had said it myself, say two weeks ago.
DKK

Square Peg, Round Hole

In another feeble attempt to force the real world into their deluded preconceived worldview comes this post (taken in it's entirity) from Jim at TKS it is truely amazing display of the media manipulation.

THE FINE PRINT OF LARRY JOHNSON'S COMMENTS [04/29 06:18 AM]

I quoted the Washington Post earlier this week — specifically noting a comment by former senior State Department counterterrorism official Larry Johnson:

"They are deliberately trying to withhold data because it shows that as far as the war on terrorism internationally, we're losing."

Larry Johnson, on his blog, April 14:

It is tough to argue we are winning the war on terrorism when the numbers in the official Government report will show the largest number of incidents ever recorded since the State Department started reporting on terrorist incidents. In the Secretary's defense, however, the sharp jump in numbers has more to do with a change in methodololgy of counting rather that an actual surge in Islamic extremist activity. In fact, if you take time to parse the numbers, the actual scope of terrorism by Islamic extremists in 2004 appeared to decline relative to the attacks during 2003 (except for Iraq).

I'd like to thank the Washington Post for not quoting that comment of Johnson, and burying the line, "administration aides sought to explain the rise in attacks as the result of more inclusive methodology in counting incidents, which they argued made year-to-year comparisons 'increasingly problematic,' sources said" wayyyyy down in the ninth paragraph, of a story headlined, "U.S. Figures Show Sharp Global Rise In Terrorism."

Can't let those inconvenient facts get in the way of the "we're losing the war on terror" storyline.

Stop The ACLU BlogBurst Part II

Blogger is acting up just like my health today and I wanted to get this spot online (sometimes you can edit but not add new when it does this) and I have more to add to the ACLU blogburst that I will post here.

More -

SCREW the ACLU!!!

Health and blogger didn't allow me to get back to this so it will have to wait, sorry!

BlogBurst: The ACLU Vs. National Security

Thursday Stop the ACLU Blogburst - Posted By Jay at Stop The ACLU Blog, stop in there and get regular updates on the ACLU's anti-American activities. Like I have said many times, the left loves the America of their dreams but hates what America really is and will do anything to destroy that. (See: Theories and Dreams)

The ACLU Vs. National Security

Perhaps there is no other issue as fragile to the preservation of our liberties than a careful balance between civil liberties and our national security. To its credit, the ACLU recognizes the danger if the scales are tipped too far to the side of national security, however it doesn’t seem to acknowledge the danger if the scales are reversed.

On July 12, 1990, Morton Halperin, who at that time was director of the Washington Office of the ACLU, testified before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence: “The ACLU is deeply troubled by the notion that there is a national security exception to the Fourth Amendment or any part of the Bill of Rights. We regard those rights as fundamental and absolute.”

“Absolute” is the key word to understanding the ACLU. Its absolutist philosophies, just as any extremist view, endangers the very civil liberties it claims to protect.

In his book “Twilight of Liberty”, William Donahue compares Halperins views of liberty with that of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson said, “A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country, by scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us: thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means.”

“There is no doubting the ACLU’s concern that there are untrustworthy public officials who will invoke national security as a cloak to cover their own wrongdoings; the pages of history are full of them. But does that mean that the only proper response is to make absolute the Bill of Rights, even in those clear-cut instances when the nation’s viability is seriously called into question: It is fair to say that most who have studied the question would prefer to side with Jefferson on this matter” Twilight of Liberty pg 172

There is probably no other time that a proper balance between civil liberties and national security becomes more important than in wartime. During times of war, sometimes unusual responses are implemented, often requiring suspension of certain liberties. Of course war opens the opportunity for abuse by governments, and the ACLU are right to watch for them. However, the ACLU in its absolutist perception of freedom, only worries about one side of the equation, civil liberties. It pays no attention to the national security side of things, not only ignoring it, but in many cases working against it.

It is nothing new for the ACLU. The grew out of an organized effort to protest World War I. The only exception to their anti-war stance was World War II, and part of that is due to the investigation during this time into the theory they could be a Communist Front group.

“After 9-11, the ACLU and its leftist cohorts spearheaded a movement to depict the US in general – and the airline industry in particular – as a snake pit of bigoted vipers eager to abuse and humiliate Muslims and Middle Easterners. The statistics, however, tell quite another story. During the nine months immediately following 9-11, the ADC received a mere 60 reports of incidents where airline security personnel prevented “Arab-looking” male passengers from flying as scheduled. While this may have been an annoying inconvenience for those affected, six or seven complaints per month is hardly an epidemic – particularly in light of the fact that the most devastating attack in American history had just been carried out by nineteen men of virtually identical physical, ethnic, and religious characteristics”.

“From 9-11 to the present day, the ACLU has vigorously opposed every governmental attempt to more effectively protect the American people’s security. It sued, for example, to prevent the implementation of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which was passed in November 2001 and included a citizenship requirement for airport screeners. It organized protests against a “discriminatory” Justice Department and INS registration system requiring male “temporary visitors” to the US from 25 Arab and Muslim nations to register with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. It condemned the FBI’s “discriminatory” plan to count and document every mosque in the US. It protested when FBI and Homeland Security agents recently tried to track down illegal Iraqi immigrants they deemed dangerous. In Illinois, the ACLU actually set up a hotline designed to give free legal advice to undocumented Iraqis facing deportation. Former ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser casually dismissed Americans’ concerns about illegal immigration, chalking such sentiments up to a “wave of anti-immigrant hysteria.”

“The ACLU further claims that the Patriot Act has created an Orwellian big government of unprecedented proportions. “Under the new Ashcroft guidelines,” reads one of its disingenuous press releases, “the FBI can freely infiltrate mosques, churches and synagogues and other houses of worship, listen in on online chat rooms and read message boards even if it has no evidence that a crime might be committed.” Curiously, the ACLU does not mention that the FBI already had the authority to take these measures long before the Bush administration took power. Nor does the ACLU point out that the FBI can wiretap only after showing a court that the suspect is affiliated with a foreign terrorist group or government – the very same requirement instituted 25 years ago by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act”.

“What the ACLU is actually rebelling against is the Justice Department’s recent removal of Clinton-era intelligence-gathering restrictions that had crippled the government’s ability to fight terrorism. These restrictions prohibited intelligence investigators from conferring and sharing information with criminal investigators, even if they were both trailing the very same suspect who was plotting a terrorist act. On August 29, 2001, for instance, an FBI investigator in New York desperately pleaded for permission to initiate an intensive manhunt for al-Qaeda operative Khalid Almihdar, who was known to be planning something big. The Justice Department and the FBI deputy general counsel’s office both denied the request, explaining that because the evidence linking Almihdar to terrorism had been obtained through intelligence channels, it could not legally be used to justify or aid an FBI agent’s criminal investigation; in short, it would constitute a violation of Almihdar’s “civil rights.” “Someday, someone will die,” the agent wrote to his FBI superiors, “and the public will not understand why we were not more effective and throwing every resource we had at certain problems.” Thirteen days later, Almihdar took over the cockpit of American Airlines Flight 77 and crashed it into the PentagonExerpt Front Page Magazine

One of the most revealing occurances towards the ACLU’s absolutist position on national security and its recent evolution can be seen in the action the board of directors took at its Oct 1989 meeting: It dropped section (a) from its policy, “Wartime Sedition Act.” Before, the ACLU held that it “would not participate (save for fundamental due process violations) in defense of any person believed to be “cooperating” with or acting on behalf of the enemy.” This policy was based on the recognition that “our own military enemies are now using techniques of propaganda which may involve an attempt to prevent the Bill of Rights to serve the enemy rather than the people of the United States.” In making its determination as to whether someone were cooperating with the enemy, “the Union will consider such matters as past activities and associations, sources of financial support, relations with enemy agents, the particular words and conduct involved, and all other relevant factors for informed judgement.”

All of this is now omitted from the Official ACLU policy!

As these policy changes indicate, balancing national security interests and civil liberties is not a goal of the ACLU. Its only goal is the absolute pursuit of unlimited civil liberties, with no regard to any consequence or negative impact upon our security. Not only does it ignore the issue of national security, but there are many examples I have shown where they actually work against it, even to the point of defending the enemy. The absolute tragedy is that it is not only the nations’s security the ACLU’s absolutist philosophy puts in danger, but the very cause of liberty itself. We’ve also saw recently the attitude of the ACLU to securing our borders, again civil liberties trump national security.

It pursues its radical agenda with your taxdollars.

Moby Is A Selfish Disgusting Idiot!

Moby wants a gay son:
"I was talking to my friend Laura, who sings on [my latest] record, and we're both getting to the point where we want to start families. We're convinced that if we have children, we're going to do everything in our power to make them gay. Like maybe drinking a lot of extra soy milk while she's pregnant, or anything that would work to make that happen. I'd just rather have a really sharp, interesting, smart gay son than some big dumb hetero meathead."
What an idiot - I can't believe that the gay left isn't up in arms over this! But as is typical they are nearly fawning over him!

Oh sure, it may sound good, look how open minded that wonderful Moby is, but any gay man who is honest will tell you that if (and that is a BIG IF as I can tell you we had no choice in our orientation) they had been given a choice they would have chosen to be straight.

No one in their right mind would choose to have an albino child would they? How about a dwarf child?

Well, would they? These are NOT illnesses but genetic equations!

Really if you had to sit down and choose for your child, come on seriously!

Why would you choose for your child to be in that position. Sure they can get along fine and even be successful but it sure is a struggle that NO SANE PARENT would choose for their child because no parent, who can look outside their own selfish desires, would choose to have their child struggle at anything!

As a gay man the idiocy of his entire thought pattern is offensive! He wants a gay child because it is fashionable and with a gay child he has a much greater chance of having a child who believes what he believes!

That is it. It is all about Moby and his purely selfish motives. Moby wants to be able to brag to his "Enlightened" friends and Moby fears that Moby would ever have to admit that Moby's child was a conservative - something that, based on this statement would hurt Moby more then any pain and struggle Moby would willingly force upon his child. And trust me, there isn't a gay man alive who hasn't experienced great pain in his life.

Selfish hypocrisy in it's naked beauty!

See, as a gay man there actually is a choice, but not the one you would expect.

The ONLY choice is weather to be honest and live as you were born, be true to yourself and this is a painful choice. Imagine giving up what is often called the American Dream! No wife, no biological children, no wedding, possible discrimination in work and housing, and often the distancing from your family.

None of these are good experiences and they are something our society should no longer tolerate, but it happens just as it happens to albino's and dwarfs. See man really isn't good with people who are different then we are. Oh sure, Moby's "Enlightened" society is probably extremely accepting - of gays at least! But try getting acceptance if you are a conservative. After all he once called this president, "a big fucking liar!"

Moby's hatred of anyone who might dare to have a different belief system is so strong that he would willingly use his own child as a pawn in his great selfish "Enlightened" game!

And for that he is an idiot and he disgusts me!

What Choice Did The Lawyers Leave Them

The left and even some uninformed on the right are up in arms about the 5 year old girl that was out of control at her school. It seems she was so unruly that the school called the police and when they couldn't calm her - including reminding her that they had warned her at a previous meeting - they handcuffed her and took her in to custody.

Obviously this is outrageous! It is outrageous that a child was that out of control and disruptive and it is outrageous that this officer handcuffed a five year old!

But let's keep in mind what brought us to this point:
  • A child that was out of control, attacked her teacher and clearly didn't have the support and discipline at home (the officer had met the child when she was with the mother but out of control I believe)
  • A school system so poisoned by the left and paralyzed by fear of lawsuits and the possibility that a little discipline may harm the child's self esteem that there is no discipline or control.
  • A society that will sue anytime for anything, imagine if the child were injured because of any action on the part of the school - or injured because of inaction (she was climbing on the furniture for God's sake).
So what is the school forced to do? Call the police of course!

Now, thanks to criminals that won't respond to police instruction and their wonderfully successful lawyers there is very little lee way in the handling of suspects! So what are the officers options?
  • Attempt to calm the suspect - check.
  • Stop and do nothing despite the fact that the child has been climbing on furniture, running around and hitting people - not a good option, she is a potential danger to herself and others.
  • Mace the child - um, ouch bad option, harmful and exposure to legal action - next
  • Shoot the child - oooow, even worse option - next.
  • Forcibly detain and handcuff the child before she injures herself (or anyone else) - done!
The school and the officer made the best choice considering the limitations our "modern, enlightened" society placed upon them.

A society that has forced itself, through the use of civil lawsuits, to remove any common sense or flexibility from our actions is a society that will handcuff each and every 5 year old or risk the rath of the left and their lawyers!

Past the Peak - We Will Run Out - TDTMD

In the past few years I have become quite concerned that we are far past the peak and will soon be running out! After all there is only a limited supply and even less available that is actually desirable and worth using in daily life!

No, I am not talking about Hubbert's (or Hubbard's?) Peak, Peak Oil or what ever moonbat theory about the control of the world by Oil you may subscribe to. Lets face it, our economy runs on oil and when it becomes financially advantageous for someone to develop an alternative then someone will develop a reasonable alternative - not a day before and not a day after.

What concerns me is something that has been involved in human history far longer then oil and, based on recent samplings and observations appears to be nearly exhausted. Fresh samples aren't being produced and there is a limited known quantity of it's base components and no more of these components can be produced.

I am talking about music, yes folks music! I love music, am passionate about music - can't put in to words how much I love music - virtually all types of music (with the exception of Jazz and some Blues and hip hop- jazz is just too unstructured and blues is just too blue and I can't understand or sing hip hop.)

Lets face it, there is a limited number of notes and a limited number of combinations that are acceptable. Man has made music for our entire history using those same notes, eventually we will run out of combinations to make new music. I like to call this eventual dry spell TDTMD (the day the music died).

I believe we are experiencing TDTMD already and it is most evident in hip hop, (which is another reason I don't like hip hop) - after all if a top hit could be sung by Tevia as easily as Gwen Steffani there is a serious problem (see Rich Girl right out of Fiddler on the Roof!)

Now it is very possible that we haven't yet reached TDTMD, it may be that it is just easier to reuse the old music and takes less talent, energy, and effort to recycle the old standards. That is possible, but come on - old Police songs, Austin Powers themes (including evil lines from the movie), Martika's Toy Soldiers, Mockingbird with MM's own twist and backing da da da da da da da of 3 or 4 notes that is used to make it sound new - aren't these clear signs that, if we aren't at TDTMD yet, then we are clearly approaching it quickly!

Unfortunately there have been no studies to show definitively how much music is left or how quickly we are depleting our music resources - of course that hasn't stopped those "experts" who tell us we are running out of oil. Despite the fact that we have NO IDEA how much oil there is and we know how many musical notes there are!

We can't say for sure when we will approach TDTMD, if we aren't there, but I fear for our civilization when that day arrives. Of course I also fear what it means for our civilization if our top artists are just too damn lazy or untalented to make new music but that is a discussion for another day isn't it!

What an X-hole

Ace is on a name search. He has narrowed it to four and you can help him select here.

I know Ace gave up on having a name with X in it, but I missed the inital suggestion period. He is so good at ripping people a new one, especially "he who will not be named" I thought I would suggest X-hole anyway.

Doubt it has a chance, but go help him out anyway.

My Constitution Trumps Your Little Rules!

David Limbaugh has a great analysis of the bottom line in the judicial confirmations war!

The Constitution trumps any little Senate Rule and the Dem's don't get that, and they never will because they don't believe in the people and their ability to make their own decisions! Just like they don't believe that the second amendment lets people bear arms, despite it's language, "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Most everyone has concentrated on the political aspects of the battle, but David Limbaugh hit's it on the head with this one. He points out that the Dem's are politicking:

The reason we're even talking about a so-called " nuclear option" is that Democrat leaders remain in denial about their consistent drubbing at the ballot box. They won't accept that the public has rejected their message.
...
This whole flap is not that complicated. Republicans won the presidential and congressional elections. The Republican president is therefore entitled under the Constitution to appoint judges, with the Senate having the right to pass on the competency and character of the nominees.

But the bottom line is:

The Senate does not have coequal authority with the president on judicial appointments as the advice-and-consent function was not intended to confer veto power on the Senate.
...

Democrats can talk until they're blue in the face about Republicans tinkering with the system by invoking a Senate rule change. But in the first place, it is just that: a Senate rule change, and as I said, the change is only necessary to correct the Democrats' abuses and usurpations of power.

The reason Democrats are filibustering judicial nominees is that they refuse to play by the rules and allow the duly elected president and Congress to exercise their constitutional authority. No one's asking them to lie down or forfeit their minority rights, merely not to break the rules to obstruct the majority.

Under our system, the people elect the president and Congress, and those two branches set policy for the government. The judiciary was never intended to be a policy-making branch. Yet Democrats, for decades have been willfully violating the Constitution by using the courts to make laws and set policy -- often in derogation of the policies already set by the other two political branches.

In an astonishing demonstration of chutzpah, Democrats have been complaining about Republicans threatening the independence of the judiciary when Republicans say they want to take action to force the judiciary to revert to its non-political, independent role. Democrats haven't respected the independence of the judiciary since before the Warren court era of judicial hyper-activism.

It is laughable that they demand an independent judiciary when what they really want is a judiciary they handpick for the express purpose of implementing policy they can't otherwise achieve through the political branches of government. They see the judiciary as both a high-powered vehicle to thwart the democratic will of the people and as a weapon for their side to use in the Culture War. They view the judiciary as a catalyst for social change, an instrument to supplant traditional values with secular relativism, and all the hedonism and licentiousness it entails.

That's why they seek to divert attention from the real issues involved in the judicial nominations debate and demonize the messengers...

Great analysis, read the whole thing.

Entertainment Trek - The Yellow Shirt Love Fest

Wow - people really love the Capital One "Yellow Shirt" commercial that I mentioned here - Screaming Like a Little Girl.

I have gotten more hits from searches for that commercial lately! Unfortunately I still don't have an online version I can link to. I did what everybody else did and googled it but only found one pay site that might have it online.

While I am on the subject of commercials I saw a new Geico commercial that included Speed Racer. It was very clever and well done - one of the best Geico commercials yet! The bridge is out and she (don't know anyone's name in the cartoon because I always hated it) is letting him know that the bridge is out, but good news ..... yea, you know she saved a lot of money on her car insurance! Good commercial, unfortunately, as I said, I have always hated Speed Racer! So much so that I don't remember it even being around before I was a young adult but it had to be because with such poor quality it has to be old, right? I think it was among the first Japanese imports and I was always amazed that the mouths moved like a bad Kung Fu movie, not really matching the words (that and the HUGE eyes us "round eyes" have).

Now those Stay Free pad commercials have to stop - I don't want to ever know that women get uncomfortable when their pads turn wet and sticky! OOOooowww - I eat dinner with the TV on and while not squeamish normally - as a gay man that is just waaaayyyy tooooo much info!

Last one - ever wonder if one of Ice Cube's (real name O'Shea Jackson) old girlfriends gave him his nick name? Perhaps because his dangly bits were small - small as a mouse. On the USA Network commercial for his new movie he introduces himself, "Hey, M'icecube." Yep, mice cubes! (Lets see someone Google that one - "Ice Cube's small cubes!")

Fox News Watch Trek - on a Roll Today

(But I'm not - oops I forgot part of my posting)

Today's Fox News Watch held three quotes about religion that made this episode a stand out in media punditry.

All are paraphrased as I didn't write them down:

  1. Hey, the liberal media just doesn't understand that the ten commandments aren't a voluntary initiative - Cal describing the media failure to understand that the Pope is in fact Catholic.
  2. Jim made a comment that was the best of the show but Crap - I forgot this one but I will fill it in after I watch the repeat of the show or see the transcript.
  3. Even Hollywood atheists can have their prayers answered! Jim describing the success of the NBC production Revelations.
I know I should have written them down then I wouldn't have forgotten the best one! Sorry, I will fill it in later!

Common Sense Trek - An Ongoing Series

Let's face it - I am often amazed how some of the people I have met in my life have survived to adulthood. With these people I can't help but wonder if they grew up without electricity in their home and lived without traffic nearby as these daily challenges clearly are more their mental abilities would seem to allow. Exposure to challenges such as these on a daily basis would have prevented them from reaching maturity - survival of the fittest and all.

I have never been a person to pull punches. I call them as I see them and often not very diplomatic. A good friend says I should get my own, "Common Sense Court" along the lines of the judge shows on TV - only, according to him, I would be beyond brutal.

Anyway I am starting a series of posts, beginning with this one, on things that should be common sense but seem to elude many Americans.

Throughout my life I have had an unwritten list of common sense items, many of which have been forgotten over the years. As such I would like your help rebuilding my list! I will promote those I like from the comments to the front page along with a link to your blog so give me your best!

Common Sense.
  1. If you want to ensure the legality of an election you must know who is voting (require an ID to vote)
  2. A nation must control it's boarder, that is what makes it a nation and why it is called a boarder
  3. Punishment for a crime should be hard, that is why it is called punishment!
  4. A minority party is deluding itself by claiming that the majority party is, "out of the mainstream."
  5. For some strange reason a pro-American bias is now considered rightwing, it's not, it's just American.
  6. Continued comparison of people to Hitler reduces the impact of Hitler's crimes (oh and it makes us ignore those doing the comparisons - the same applies to the terms crooks and liars!)
  7. Every pie thrown at a conservative should be treated as if it contained some type of chemical or acid. It isn't just a harmless prank or an expression of free speech!
  8. If you drink coffee while driving chances are good you will spill! Spilling coffee on your cooter (BTW, is that spelled like hooters or couter?) is going to hurt - coffee is hot, always has been always will be! If it weren't hot you would complain to the manager!
I will be keeping an archive here - Common Sense Archive.

The Good Thing About Pain

The good thing about pain is when it goes away, even for a couple of days. Other then that and pain letting you know your alive I can't think of many good things about it (aside from the obvious pain warnings of a hot stove but that isn't the kind of pain I am discussing here).

Spent yesterday puking and napping - not the flu but a reaction to something. Not sure what but I have been extra dizzy lately.

And when I say puking I mean violently throwing up! Luckily it started early enough that I had only had water and a bit of coffee. Kept it from being too bad. 3rd time this year - treatment and management had kept that symptom limited to just once or twice a year.

Strangely enough I learned how Yogi's can control their breathing, after all they can breath through any orifice, even a straw sticking out of their punjana, right Eddy? While I was trying to control the pain and nausea I actively regulate my breathing. As I would begin to doze off I would actually stop breathing and I would wake and have to start myself breathing again. This went on for about an hour or so. Sounds strange but because I was actively controlling this autonomic function it wasn't ready to kick in automatically (as in autonomic) either because of the illness and pain or because of exhaustion - one way or another it wasn't ready to kick in as I fell asleep. It feels really strange and scary to have to remind yourself to breath!

But enough about that....pain and chronic illness do challenge one's positive attitude. Was it Ben Franklin who said that one can only appreciate health, wealth, and sleep when they have been interrupted?
